StuffIt's primary function is to create, expand, view, and manipulate archives.
Archives contain files and folders that are shrunk in size without losing any information.
Archives are a very good way to group common files together and to reduce "space" on a computer or network.
Unless an archive is segmented, an archive contains all of its files and folders in just one file.
StuffIt allows you to create Self-Extracting Archives (SEA). SEAs are created with a .exe extension. Once created, the archive can then be expanded without the use of an expander program like StuffIt.
When doing a search in ArchiveSearch, you can setup the application to exclude certain folders that you know don't contain StuffIt or Zip archives. This will speed up the search. Add exclusion folders in the Compression tab in the Options dialog.
The File menu contains a list of the most recent archives that were opened or saved in ArchiveView.
ArchiveInfo does not just display information about an archive. You can also save, segment, and add a password to an archive.
Segmenting an archive means that you take an archive and split it into equal size "chunks". These chunks can than be rejoined automatically by opening the first segment of the archive.
Segmenting is ideal for users who wish to save an archive over more than one disk or CD.
For added security, StuffIt and Zip archives can be password protected. (NOTE: Once password protected, there is no way for the creators of StuffIt to break this password)
Macintosh text files can be converted automatically to Windows text files by setting an option in the Cross Platform tab in the Options dialog.
To keep archives all together on your computer, it is recommended that you store archives in the "My Archives" folder. "My Archives" is easily accessible under the "My Documents" folder in Windows Explorer.
A drop area is a place where you can drag and drop files and folders to create, expand, and view archives. To see the drop areas, click the "Drag and Drop" icon in the toolbar.
You can customize what drop areas appear in the StuffIt application. Go to View->Drop Areas->Choose Drop Areas in the menu to choose the drop areas that you wish to see.

To only see the expansion drop area, click on View->Expander Mode in the menu.
